The Story Behind the Lens: Meet the Prahl Family

Hi there — I’m Allison, the heart behind Heirloom Story Co., and today I want to pull back the curtain a little to share a bit about my family and the moments that keep me grounded in this work.

These photos — taken on a summer evening during a weekend getaway in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — are extra special to me. Conditions may not have been ideal when we captured these, considering the “photographer” was a tripod and our baby wasn’t in the mood to offer smiles. But they are real — and they’re ours.

The evening light was golden, the lake calm, and the black flies relentless (Michigan locals, you know). But we carved out just a few quiet minutes on the shoreline to document our family: sandy toes, a wriggly baby in arms, wind in our hair, and joy tucked in between the chaos. These are the kinds of photos I hold closest — the ones that tell a story even when everything isn’t “just right.”

The Upper Peninsula is a sacred place for us. It’s where we go to slow down, to breathe deep in the pines, and where we’ll watch our son grow up chasing sunsets and skipping stones. Whether it’s cozying up by the wood stove in winter or trekking out to our favorite sandy beach in summer, this land holds precious memories — and now, new ones are unfolding with our child.

This particular weekend, we spent time with close friends and their two kids. Watching the girls dote on our little one (who soaked up every ounce of the attention) was a gift in itself. And to top it off, we tried something totally new: sturgeon fishing.

If you’ve never seen a sturgeon before, imagine something out of the Jurassic era — all armor and muscle. They’re truly prehistoric creatures. And yes, I caught one. Ask me about it when we meet… I promise, it’s a story worth hearing.

I share all this not just to introduce myself, but to give you a glimpse into the heart of Heirloom Story Co. My love for photography comes from moments like this — where life isn’t staged or scripted, but full of meaning, connection, and story.

Whether your family session happens in your backyard or by a serene lake, I want you to walk away with photos that feel like you — beautiful, honest, and a little bit chaotic in the best of ways.

Thanks for being here, and for letting me tell your story by sharing a little of mine.

With heart,
Allison
