As a West Michigan family photographer, one of the most common questions I get from parents is: “How do I make sure my kids cooperate during our family photography session?” The truth is — kids will be kids, and that’s part of the beauty of this experience. That being said, with a little preparation your session can be a fun, stress-free time for all that offers a gallery of memories you’ll treasure for years to come.
Here are my top five tried-and-true tips for making your West Michigan family photography session with kids a success:
Before your session, make sure little tummies are full! Kids (and adults!) are happiest when they’re not hungry. A quick meal or snack beforehand goes a long way in keeping everyone comfortable and content.

Don’t worry, no judgement here! Snacks during the session can provide a quick reset when kids need a break. I’ll likely have a few goodies of my own to offer just in case you forgot to pack a little treat! Or the promise of a fun activity afterward — like ice cream or playground time — can work wonders in encouraging smiles throughout your session.

Running late = stressed parents and anxious kids. If you can, plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives everyone a chance to settle in and lets us chat a bit before we start the session. A relaxed beginning always leads to better images.

Select and prepare outfits at least a day before your session. Lay everything out — down to the shoes and accessories — so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Coordinated, comfortable outfits help you look and feel your best. (For more ideas, check reference the Style Guide I provide at booking!)

The most important tip of all…be realistic with your expectations. Here’s the truth: kids may cry, be clingy to one parent, or run in circles with all that tiny person energy that rarely seems to fizzle out. And that’s okay! My goal is to capture your family as you are in this season of life, and occasionally that means turning chaos into ‘class’ or rather heirloom quality images. Sessions go much smoother when parents give their kids a little grace and let me work my magic to bring out their smiles. Sometimes the “imperfect” moments become your most treasured photos!
